KEINER LETTERPRESS STUDIO

KEINER LETTERPRESS STUDIO

The Keiner Letterpress Studio was launched officially as Prairie Moon Press in 2019. The studio was built from the ground up through the generosity of Knox alum Hal (Harry) Keiner '67. In the summer of 2016, Keiner loaded his pick-up with a collection of vintage lead and wood type, type cabinets, specialized tools, and several presses, and made two trips to Galesburg. On his second trip, in August, Keiner, a retired archivist and historian who now runs a book-arts and letterpress studio in North Carolina, spent several days working with a group
of Department of Art and Art History and Creative Writing faculty to set-up, calibrate, and test-run the donated equipment. Hal returns several times a year with gifts and materials, including type, and we are now equipped with two Kelsey platen presses, a Vandercook 1 proofing press, and a Challenge Proof press (our newest arrival!).

In recognition of Sam Moon’s and Robin Metz’s legacy, Prairie Moon Press takes its name from a long ago suggestion of Robin’s. Our continued devotion to their memories, along with our commitment to current faculty and students, and to future faculty and students, will shape the work of the press in the years to come.
